Some Lessons still being learned in Digital Vs. Film Photography
I’m a big believer in the fact that many of life’s real lessons come when you weren’t even looking for them.
Last week I had a shoot for a local Interior Designer and I ‘worked it’.
I squeezed every last drop of juice out of my seven exposure brackets and had stuff looking so sharp that you’d almost swear you could reach right into the monitor and feel the fabric on the couch or the coolness of a granite counter top in the Kitchen.
The FEEDBACK that I got back from the Designer was that it looked too ‘computer generated’.
Most of the best work I’ve seen online still looks reasonably ‘organic’, in other words, considerably more film-like than mine might do.
So with that in mind I began to play with programs that have ‘Pseudo’ Film Stocks to offer.
I ran the same shot through trial versions of Exposure 4 from Alien Skin and Nik Color Efex Pro 2 and they add more of a film ‘flavour’ than a real film ‘look’.
The technologies are just far too different, however they CAN take the ‘edge’ off a little and make things a bit less crisp and a tiny bit softer.
The end result looks quite different than what usually results from my typical workflow, but it is a FLAVOUR, and variety is the spice of life.
In the end, I found the Alien Skin-Exposure 4 versions a little less aggressive than the same film stocks from NIK, and finally settled on either REALA or Kodachrome 25 (not the sharp version).
It’s worth noting that you can turn the ‘film grain’ OFF in Alien Skin.
The end result here is not as you see on the screen shot but was done in K25.
Either way it’s certainly worth remembering that just when you think you’ve seen it all…
